"The artistic patrimony of all mankind" - Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and Saint Peter's Basilica The Basilica of St. Peter, the Sistine Chapel, the Raphael Stanzas and the Vatican Museum. Duration: 4 hours Our private tour of the Vatican is a personalized and relaxed visit to Rome's best museum and biggest church. We like offering this tour because it gives you the chance to linger over the masterpieces and it gives us the chance to make your visit a more in depth one. In the picture gallery we'll show you how the Renaissance developed; its roots in the simple but powerful works of the Middle Ages, the search for realism and a new language in the 14th and 15th century, culminating with its pinnacle: the works of the young Raphael. The museum has many wings and a variety of collections that will help illustrate to you how the ancient Romans, Etruscans and even Egyptians made their mark on Italian art. The museum visit culminates with the Raphael Stanzas whose angelic, dreamlike style remains unsurpassed and finally the must-see Sistine Chapel. When even going in cold is a great experience imagine how much more fascinating Michelangelo's greatest work becomes when you learn of his struggles with the tempestuous Pope Julius II, the symbolism of the images and not least how he did it! Although the Sistine is where popes are chosen it is St. Peter's that fully embodies the pageantry of Catholicism as its mother church. You will learn of its foundation, why the church came to exist on the spot it does. Did you know that it isn't the original church? The tombs of the popes line the different chapels, you'll hear their stories. The greatest artists of the fifteen and sixteen hundreds put their souls into the decoration, we'll bring their vision alive for you. The tour concludes with a visit to St. Peter's square, designed by Bernini, it is considered the heart of Rome.
